Product Description
Isolation.
The Alaskan Territory.
In the 1950s Alaska was not yet a state when a young woman, the author Ruth Vincent, accompanied her biologist husband to remote Afognak Island.
The two were alone with short-wave radio and bush pilots as their only connection with the outside world. Months at a time would elapse without Ruth even seeing another woman. Foxes became pets, mail was delivered by bush pilots, snowshoes were essential, and puffin eggs enhanced meals.
In the Wake of the Frontier vividly portrays this three-year adventure. Life on Afognak Island included coping without electricity or running water, facing Kodiak brown bears, and dealing with life-threatening situations. At the same time, the stunning Alaskan scenery and idyllic peacefulness were breathtaking. Through the author’s eyes, dealing with emergencies, aloneness, and inconveniences all come alive in this engaging historical memoir.

The Alaskan Wilderness in the mid-1950s
By David L. Willis
This is a fascinating and personal account of a young, adventurous couple's three-year experience on an isolated island near Kodiak, Alaska. The descriptions of life in a white wilderness are so vivid that one wants to curl up by the fireplace to keep warm. Their childhoods in rural Oregon proved to be good preparation for the loneliness and isolation they experienced. The author prepared the book based on letters that she wrote weekly to her mother throughout these three years alone. Reading the book makes one appreciate the comforts of life in 21st century America. This is a good read for a cold winter's night. I have just learned that the author has established a web site with more information about herself and the book: www.ruthvincent.com

A 'real' story!
By Kenneth Reddington
Even if the author wasn't 'Aunt Ruth' to me, I would have enjoyed the book. It's not often you read a book about what REALLY happens. These days, almost everything is written up to sound 'interesting'. But, life is not dull or dreary. It's all in what you make of it. Of course, it brings back memories of Uncle Bob, too. I can almost smell and taste the pancakes!?! I envy them their three-year 'honeymoon'.

Life in 2 Seasons
By Daniel Reddington
This book is an excellent description of life in relative isolation on an island in Alaska. I thought the description of the contrast between the almost total isolation of the "Quiet Season" and the relative busyness and social interaction of the "Noisy Season" showed how in some ways life in Alaska 50 years ago still had many similarities to the Frontier days while rapidly changing to become more fully incorporated into life on the "Outside."
