My opinion

I feel the book was written ok...just OK. I feel the biggest problem is that its too broad. Just when you are finally figuring out what your reading... its about the wrong engine size or year. I will have to admit that its probably as good as its going to get for a repair manual not bought from the dealer. Bottom line good for info, just not for a rebuild

Very Good Manual

Except for having to jump around to find things, I was able to rebuild my Johnson 110 hp motor with it and it runs great. This is the first time I ever tried to do this and without the manual, I would have been lost. There were a few things that I had to figure out myself, but all in all this manual helped a great deal. I would recomment it to those wishing to try it as I did.

Doel-Fin is the original hydrofoil developed by an aeronautical engineer to improve overall performance on all boats with outboard motors or outdrive units. Molded in 2 pieces of guaranteed unbreakable, high-strength plastic, each foil is designed to flex independently to absorb shock. The positive effects include greater stability, consistent planing at lower RPM, faster out-of-the-hole performance, steadier turns, higher top-end speeds and lower bow rise at all speeds.

Good addition to small boat - not wihout its drawbacks, however

I installed the Doel-Fins on my 11.5 foot Avon SuperSport RIB (the S3.45 to be exact). The Avon has an older 2-stroke Evinrude 30 hp motor and the Doel-Fins were easy to install without requiring a right-angle drill. I spent a LOT of time measuring and determining placement before I drilled the holes in my cavitation plate, but once I drilled the holes, the rest of the install took maybe 10 minutes at most.The good stuff:The Doel-Fin definitely makes a big difference in two areas - getting up on plane and staying there at lower speeds. In fact, I am now able to stay on plane at speeds as low as about 6-8 mph, which allows me to save fuel and create less of a wake while transiting through harbors. Also, prior to installing the Doel-Fin, the boat had a pretty strong tendency to bang up and down when going into a head sea (swell coming toward the boat). While I wouldn't say it was "porpoising", it was close. After installing the Doel-Fin, the ride into a head sea is much smoother and tends to stay on plane much better when throttling down after cresting a swell.The not-so-good-stuff:Really, just two things - 1) Definitely reduced top speed. Prior to the Doel-Fin the boat would do about 31 mph at WOT in a lightly choppy sea. After the Doel-Fin, max speed at WOT seems to be about 27 or 28 mph. This represents about a 10% reduction in top speed. Not a big deal, since I don't really operate the boat at WOT much anyway. 2) The Doel-Fin really, really catches kelp! It is very tricky to get in and around the kelp to fish or dive without snagging the Doel-Fin. When this happens, the usually procedure of reversing the prop briefly doesn't always clear the snag. I usually either have to do a quick reverse followed by a FULL THROTTLE forward push to BBBBRRRRREEEEAAAAKKKK through the kelp, followed by another quick reverse to clear the prop, or I have to shut down the motor and clear the foul by hand. The problem with the latter approach is that if I have pulled anchor, I'll often drift right back into the kelp by the time I have it cleared, which repeats the problem cycle all over again.Bottom line, its a good addition to a small boat. I found that the fins seemed a bit large for my small motor - I wish they made a smaller size that had less overlap of the cavitation plate.

Almost as Advertised

A fairly good product with some cautions. If you already have stabilizers, this type product has a tendency to make the boat slide around alot in the stern. If I barely use the manufacturer stabilizers it seems to make everything a lot more steady. The Doel-Fin works as advertised in that the boat definitely comes up quicker which is really great! I'm sure it takes a lot of strain off the engine and is helping my GPH on fuel, although I have not had a chance to do an actual measurement yet.One more thing to think about. The advertisement leads you to assume it will bolt right-on. This was not quite true. Depending on how the fin plates are arranged on your prop, be prepared for some contorsions and acrobatics, not to mention some out of the ordinary tools manipulations to get it installed in the correct place. Once installed, it's great and definitely worth the money.

Doel Fin works!

Had a Doel Fin on my small 15 hp Evinrude that seemed to work well, so decided to give it a shot on my 90hp Yamaha to see if it could fix my cavitation issues. Installation was a snap and had it on in less than 15 minutes. Have been using it for over a month now and my cavitation problems are gone. I have a 15.5' Livingston and used to take forever to get it up on plane. With the Doel Fin, it jumps up on plane as soon as I give it some throttle. I feel that I have way better plane control and my boat also goes faster. I would recommend this product to anybody having cavitation issues. Would buy again if needed.

Wow what a price. runs great - Lasted a decade worth of boat hours

All said and done I would still buy from them, at the least for a rebuild kit/parts.Original post:I Got this DB ELECTRIC BRAND STARTER for 1990 Johnson 150HP outboard engine. Has worked 2 to 4 a week for 6 months :) when fishing and skiing, skiing increase the starting times with every skier so I have probably turned it over a couple hundred times so far. I flipped the brushes on my old worn starter and have it on board for emergencies.2/2/12:Well an emergency came up and we used a rope along with this starter cranking to get the engine going to head home. This starter made a grinding sound so I thought a brush was worn and got jammed. I put my old starter that had worn brushes previously back in yesterday to have it working and had a great day today. Overall I put 300 hrs on the boat since buying this DB starter 2 YEARS AGO (we live on the water with a boat lift and it's our only hobby). We drive about a mile to where we ski and 2 to where I fish, so not a lot of the boat hours is spent in travel, but rather usage/starting situations. The boat had 600 hours total after 20 years when I bought it. I say this because it now gets a lot of use and technically if you look at it by hours used, the starter would have lasted 10 years. For casual weekenders who trailer their boat once a month it should last a decade. However it did not really fail due to the typical things like worn brushes and seals.I took it apart and the brushed were basically brand new! nothing seemed amiss inside. all the bearing/seals looked great, paint was perfect/no rust outside. What I did find was that the starter drive gear that meets up with the fly wheel wore poorly on my flywheel and or just wore down. I think I will take my gear from my old one and switch it to this DB starter since it's still like new inside. The worn DB gear was able to slide up to far past the centrifugal gear on the post and just spin with little grab and a lot of grinding noise. See pics.A replacement kit is like $30 so if you buy this starter and you go out in the Gulf 100 miles then buy a gear/rebuild kit for $30 or use the old gear from the old starter that you should have on the boat as a backup and put the brand new gear on the old starter and use it as a complete backup.I'm confident in the starter, but it could have lasted longer overall. I would never pay $200 for a new starter compared to this one, especially after seeing the brand new brushes. SEE PICS OF WEAR, and when you change your spark plugs each season look at the teeth, I could have just had a bad drive gear. Also, this company makes starters that people use as upgraded starters for diesel engines vs stock/dealer starters, so I won't buy anything different in the future. Even with a $30 rebuild gear kit it's still way cheaper at $94 than most.2/3/12 - update: I just ordered my second one. I looked around at brushes, gears, etc and decided this is the best rebuild kit price available all in one working starter. I'm going to vacuum pack it and use the bushes caps, drive gear, etc when stuff fails next.2/29/12 - I just decided to put the new one in and rebuilt the other two as one later. It's in the boat working as it should. I'm taking the top gear off my old oem and putting it on the starter for the worn DB gear as a back up. The brushes etc as so mint on the DB I want to get it set as a backup.

I was a little worried about buying this starter for my boat. Its so inexpensive. How could it compare to the high dollar ones? I worried for nothing it seems. It has fired my Evinrude 150 up every time.

Great product, fair price, came before estimated delivery date and easy install. I would recommend to anyone that buys this starter is to lube the shaft that the gear that engages the flywheel. Mine was spinning but not engaging, lubed it and all is good.

This is the most comprehensive repair manual availible for 1990-2000 Merc/Mariner outboard engines. A must have for your boat's glove box and your tool box. Very, very detailed and concise. Easy to read. Perfect for the casual owner and the certified mechanic. Contains everything from general boating and maintenance information to precise tuneup, wiring, electronic, power head and lower unit specs and rebuild instructions. You're nuts if you own a 1990-2000 Mercury/Mariner outboard engine and you don't have this handy.

Most comprehensive repair manual

From the basic do it yourselfer to the skilled mechanic, I think this book is a valuable tool for everyone. Over the lifetime of your engine, one can save thousands of dollars in basic maintenance costs and repairs. Seloc actually uses engines that have hundreds of hours of operation versus the factory manuals. They provide meaningful step by step photography and easy to understand procedures. The most important thing they do is tell you how to put the parts back together.

This is a nearly useless manual. It covers too many models and deals mainly with problems common to all covered engines. Not good if your large outboard needs more diagnosis than a 5hp.Look at others - skip this one.
