Return to Islamorada is a 70,000 word descriptive narrative that interweaves ingredients of human drama and nautical adventure.It is a story of internal and external conflicts revolving around John, a middle age, self-doubting Captain and his three friends, Frank, a successful businessman faced with the crisis of midlife; Ronlee, a strapping youth with an excess of testosterone; and Sal, a claustrophobic. The saga unfolds as they prepare for a sailing trip over Labor Day Weekend. The description of events and conversations between the men are designed to augment the scope and tone of this chronicle. The narrative traces a foolhardy current day voyage and a devastating hurricane of yesterday. It is a tale of four men that take on more than they can handle when they sail the small sailboat, Keelover, into the islands and reefs of the Florida Keys. Their destination is a string of islands in the center of the archipelago called Islamorada. They are barely aware that the history of the sub-tropical paradise alternates from harsh and gentle, with bright sunshine and swaying palms intermingled with the havoc of deadly hurricanes. Through a detailed plot, the inner emotions of the protagonists are revealed to dramatize their fight against the elements and their courageous spirits. By using realistic Florida settings, the text renders a tale that enacts the determination of a group of men to battle against the power of nature to survive.

Return to Islamorada is a funfilled and touching book that holds your interest throughout. Anyone that has ever sailed in the sometimes ominous waters near the Florida Keys can readily identify with this book. The everchanging water conditions that threaten our very existance will bring us back to the reality of the "Real World" and remind of us what life is really all about. If you read it you will love it and perhaps it will give you something to think about...

A great read for boat lovers

Anyone who has ever sailed or operated a small boat will find something they can relate to in this funny,historical,and sometimes serious,novel. If you Know the Florida Keys,you will recognize many locations, if not, you will want to see them when you finish this great read. The characters are well developed, they will have you laughing but also tug at your heart. The authors use of historical flashback makes this book not only humorous but educational. Buy this one you will love it.

Best price anywhere for Mercury Marine starter!

My starter showed up two days early. It was the exact product the local Marina wanted 4X more for. I installed it right away and it fired up my boat immediately. I cannot say enough good things about D&B ELECTRICAL SUPPLY!!!!!

Buying this motor was a very good experience. The motor was packaged for shipment in very good materials. It was shipped promptly as they said. I tracked it door to door with no problems. I expected to pay approximately $120. I actually paid about $70. I would not hesitate to buy from these people again.

Starter was just delivered. Put it on my 25 hp Mercury motor and it fired right up. So far so good. The price was MUCH less than the dealer wanted for the same starter.

A great read for anyone interested in business management

This readable, well-researched, and often hilarious book will delight the dickens out of any boater, power or sail (great gift!!!). More broadly, anyone interested in business management -- what works, what doesn't work, and where technology fits in -- will find much to ponder in this book. Spurr chronicles the demise of dozens of failed boating companies; an all-too-frequent theme is the destruction that follows on a company's acquisition by a large corporation seeking to "diversify," which seems, inevitably, to result in bankruptcy. Of equal interest are the few stories of genuine and lasting success, typified by Catalina Yachts, founded by Frank Butler. Mr. Butler independently arrived at the conclusions reached, belatedly, by legions of high-priced consultants and business school professors: innovate to create new markets, build quality in, treat your employees as if they were part of your family, speak personally to customers, resist acquisition, and -- if possible -- remain privately held. There's also much to ponder for economists and business historians. Imagine what the automobile industry would be like if cars lasted for 50 years -- well within the lifespan of a properly maintained, well-built fiberglass yacht. Spurr remarks that the industry's greatest mistake, viewed cynically, was its failure to build obsolescence into its products. But another factor in the industry's overall decline is the recalcitrant character of fiberglass boat-building technology, which is notoriously resistant to assembly line methods; were you to visit the Beneteau, Catalina, or Hunter factories, you'd see labor-intensive, one-at-a-time boat building techniques that do not fundamentally differ from those of 50 years ago. Unable to lower production costs, companies have instead turned to volume as a way to force down supplier prices -- that's why you get three big, dominant manufacturers in this market -- but the result, overall, is that most new fiberglass yachts of reasonable length (30' and up) are too expensive for middle-class buyers. Fiberglass boats were invented by dreamers who wanted to bring boating to Everyman; Spurr suggests, soberingly, that the dream seems destined to die.

Great for those who love taking "dock walks"

What a super book! It has everything the average sailor could want to know about fiberglass. I have no idea how Bob Perry (one of the editorial reviewers) could read this in one evening. It's just packed with information about most of the American (and some international) sailboat builders, their boats, and in most cases their demise. A lot of "experts" at my marina proudly profess knowledge about the histories of the different boats but, after reading this book, I've discovered that many of their stories are not accurate. I you love sailboats and wonder who built them, where they were built, how they were built, and when; then you should get this book. You'll certainly have a better understanding of boat brochures touting the virtues of features like S-glass, Airex cores, and the Scrimp process. And your next marina dock walk to check out other boats will be so much more interesting.

Interesting book marred by incorrect historical facts

I was excited when I found a book devoted to the recent history of fiberglass boats. My enthusiasm was diminished by some of the incorrect historical information conveyed in the first hand accounts the author relies on. For example, on page 9 of the hard bound addition he quotes John Wills, "About 1942 . . . I was chief engineer and janitor for Western Plastics . . . That same year a small group from Cal Tech (headed by Dr. Wernher Von Braun, the rocketeer) called me to look at a jet assist take off device".In 1942 Dr. Wernher Von Braun was in Peenemuende Germany testing V-2 rockets for use against the Allied forces. He wasn't heading up any groups at "Cal Tech".Such an obvious mistake should have been caught by the author, or at least his publisher's proofreader and never have made it into the published edition.

Well worth the money

For any weekend mechanic that owns a Yamaha this maual is for you. It gives step by step instructions for performing hte work. For eac hsection there is also trouble shooting guides. The only drawback I found is it does not contain all of the work necessary for this engine. The "poppet" valve isn't covered as well as some other items that must be replaced, or inspected, per requirements.

What do we want in travel guides? I believe we want accuracy and a balance between context (history, literature, architecture, culture, etc...) and pragmatics (timetables, addresses, prices, etc...). This guide to India is the best of the lot, conforming to my simple formula.It's nice and thick, to give the cultural traveler enough to contemplate, but it's also portable and durable, to fit the needs of the frustrated backpacker. Footprint has been at India for a long time (this is the 18th edition!), so you can expect a well-refined and useful product, not to mention an enjoyable armchair read. The book is as useful in the Indian countryside as in the cities. It's really THAT comprehensive, and it includes detailed chapters on Kashmir and other Himalayan provinces.Don't buy this book looking for pretty color photographs or graphics. You'll need your mind to create those. And when you go to India, you'll get to test you visual imagery against reality. It's really quite exhilarating!As a fan of Rough Guides, this is one of the few that I will recommend ABOVE that excellent series.If you haven't been to glorious India, buy this book and go... alone if necessary. I've been four times, always with this book. It has NEVER let me down.

Not perfect, but better the the competition

Though I have not yet seen the 17th edition of Footprint's India handbook, I have read the 15th and 16th ("India Handbook 2009") editions, taking the latter with me during a recent trip in the Subcontinent. I found Footprint's guide vastly superior to its competitors, the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide publications.The Footprint guide gives considerably more background on the history and culture of India than the Lonely Planet, and a bit more than the Rough Guide. If you are a traveler keen on understanding the people instead of merely seeing monuments and buying souvenirs, then you'll find Footprint's supplementary information to be of great help. Footprint also spurs the traveler on to tackling some challenges on his own, as interesting sites outside the beaten tourist path are occasionally mentioned without the exact steps necessary to get there. In comparison, the Lonely Planet especially seems like it is meant to hold a timid traveler's hand.Footprint's guides use a rather different organizational scheme than other guidebooks, dividing each province into zones and listing all accomodation, restaurants and transportation options for each city in the zone at the end of the zone section instead of at the end of the city entry. This can take some getting used to. The only real complaint I have is that Footprint has clearly not been updating its listings much from edition to edition. The 15th and 16th guides are basically identical even as prices rise and some once-venerable guesthouses become dilapidated. I don't use listings, taking a guidebook along only for the maps and the walking tours, but readers who depend on them might not be getting the best info.

This Is The One

I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewers. I've spent 12 weeks in India over two trips and I've used the Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide and the Footprints. If I could only take one guide, it would be Footprints because it's the most concise and well-researched of the three (my second choice would be the Rough Guide; I like LP, but feel that their India guide isn't very well updated). So buy the Footprints and get thee to the India Mike website, which is the best travel website ever. Ask an impossible question and you'll get an answer (or 10), usually within a few hours.
