Forget Lonely Planet - this is the one necessary guide

Great introduction to the regions and their attractions? Check. Detailed descriptions of even the smallest places of interest? Check. Quick but practical hotel and restaurant ratings? Check. In-depth information on history, politics, geology and landscape, vegetation, including crops, wildlife, religion, culture, festivals, economy? Check. Extensive information on getting around, routes from A to B (and many alternatives), trekking, air and train travel, cycling etc? Check.This guide really has everything you need, practical and educational - and in a very practical little package to boot (hard cover, small size, very thin pages to avoid too much bulk). The authors' biographies are revealing: one of them is a bona fide expert, a professor of South Asian Geography at the School of Oriental and African Studies. It's that kind of company you need to get a grip on a country like India. And you usually don't get it - most guidebooks are written by people who are simply more experienced in travel than your average joe, but have no in-depth knowledge of the country.What it lacks, compared to Lonely Planet/Rough Guides is a chummy, get-a-load-of-this tone. Unadorned information may seem dry to some, but to others it is a relief compared to guides whose authors assume you share their prejudices. For instance, hotel listings are terse. A typical entry reads: "Category E, 130 rooms, some A/C (better rm on upper floor),restaurant (Indian veg.) rec; reasonably clean but gets crowded and noisy"It's worth looking through other guidebooks if you want restaurant and hotel listings fleshed out for you. But if you only carry one guidebook to India, let it be this one.

Truly Top-Notch

I spent two months backpacking through India in the summer of 2003, and the Footprint guide was tremendous. I also brought the Rough Guide to India, but Footprint was much more useful (though both blew away Lonely Planet!).There is great coverage of smaller towns in all regions of the country, something that is invaluable if you're spending an extended period of time in the country. Almost every time I'd be overnighting in some obscure town as part of a bus journey, I'd at least find a paragraph or two, which saved the day more than once.The maps are great. The most readable I've seen in any guidebook. The detailed maps of the whole country in the back were extremely useful.The background section was also the most in-depth I've seen among India guidebooks. Very good.All in all, this is definitely the best guidebook to use for India. One of the biggest benefits of it though, is that it isn't very popular. If Lonely Planet says a place is cheap, you can guarantee they've quadrupled their price since then. Footprint India really helps you stay off the beaten tourist path... I rarely had encounters with other travellers... almost all of my time was spent with locals, and the Footprint guide is definitely geared towards that. Most of the hotels reviewed aren't backpacker-focused (though those are there), but are mostly used by locals travelling for various reasons.Highly recommended!

I spent several weeks in 2004 traveling through India using only this guide. The hotel listings were very helpful and even a relative that accompanied me on my travels (who is a cosmopolitan native) was impressed at the hotels we found for very reasonable rates and convenient locations. I always asked to view the room before checking in because my standards vary from their standards, but this book gave me a great headstart on which hotels to visit. If I didn't agree with their recommendation, I always found a similar hotel. It is a bit thin on the history and culture, for which I suggest a Fodor's.

Baja Outpost by Marvin and Aletha Patchen and Their Guests

Out in the high desert of Baja nestled between boulders and boojums, Marvin and Aletha Patchen have a cabin. And they have been gracious enough to open this cabin to friends and travelers they have met in their journeys. Due to its unique location this cabin has truly become a Baja Outpost.

A guestbook lies in wait for those coming through the door. Some write of what brought them thus far on their journey. Others write of where they hope the road will take them. Some write in the purely in the moment, describing the cabin, the sunsets and the flora. One particular visitor seems to revel in his encounters of the very close kind with the local fauna. But various desert critters don't deter the guests from enjoying the comforts of a place to call home during various adventures in Baja.

The Patchen's interesting and insightful comments are interspersed with the guest entries of over fifteen years, providing us with a very personal history of place. At the beginning of the book, the cabin seems like a simple refuge, nothing more than four walls, a ceiling and a door with a working lock. But it becomes a richly decorated home with the thoughts and impressions left by its visitors.

Some of the names are instantly familiar. Some become familiar as people are drawn back again to the little cabin in the middle of nowhere, providing the reader a very personal glimpse into the heart of Baja as seen through many eyes.

This is a perfect present for readers who long for those dirt roads and smell of sage, for those who travel off the beaten path and know the value of a good road story.

Product Description

This true-life adventure-travel story follows John Harrison and his wife Heather deep into an unexplored region of the Amazon rainforests in the Guiana Highlands that border Brazil. With just a canoe and a shotgun, the newlyweds followed the most remote tributary of the Amazon River without any means of contacting civilization. Harrison tells their story as, unaided and off the map, they encounter jaguars and poisonous frogs, are threatened by malaria, and almost lose their way entirely. While experiencing travel at its most raw, they struggle to keep their deteriorating sanity and relationship intact in one of the most hostile and unforgiving places in the world. Far more harrowing than reality shows like Survivor and Amazing Race, this is armchair adventure at its most honest and compelling.

Extremely riveting!

I must admit that the cover photo caught my attention at the local library and I'm sure glad I found this hidden gem! John Harrison has the audacity to attempt an upstream traverse of a remote Amazon tributary...yes, upstream, against and around raging rapids, fallen trees, swift currents and for me, the horror of horrors...multiple hornet and wasp nests! Then he plans on hauling his canoe and all the gear 15 kilometers over a small mountain range to a river that makes it's way to the northern coast of South America. On an old Indian trail across these mountains that may not even still exist. And not by himself or with another seasoned, masochistic Amazon adventurer like himself, but with his wife! Need I say more? This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys REAL adventure stories where there is no quick rescue should things go wrong. So order it today (or go to your local library) and start reading because you won't be disappointed!

I prefered to read "Antecume" by Andre Cognat

People who are interested in reading about the Amazon rain forest or French Guyana should in fact read another book called "Antecume", a true biography written by the Andre Cognat, who dared to venture alone on a small canoe on the Oyapock River (at the border of Brazil and French Guyana), got lost and injured, and was miraculously rescued by Amerindians (the "Wayanas", a tribe with whom he still lives among today), many years before Mr. and Mrs. Harrison and at a time when much of Guyana was still unexploired.I have my doubts as to whether the events narrated by the Harrisons have indeed truly happened or not, or at least the way they are depicted in this book. It is my impression that the authors' exploits have been quite exaggerated. I visited Guyana several times and I have not heard of the Harrisons. In fact, Guyana is no longer such a risky place in the wilderness to venture into! It has been quite modernized since colonial times and 'the bagne" over the past decades; especially after the rocket launching site was build near Kourou. There is now easy access to healthcare facilities, and transportation and telecommunication equipments are quite modern and widely available. In fact, the most remote areas located at the East and South of the Guyanese territory are stricly delimited and called "zone interdite": in other words, it is even illegal to enter them without the authorization of the local government.

Much has been written about dolphins and whales, and excellent books exist especially on the charismatic bottlenose dolphins; and killer, humpback, and sperm whales. But detailed studies have been carried out on a handful of other species, and this book summarizes our state of knowledge of a little dolphin - the southern hemisphere "dusky,” and compares its behavioral strategies in different environs. The editors, Bernd and Mel Würsig, began studying duskies in Patagonia Argentina in 1972. Although they have been to many parts of the Earth since then -- including work on Amazon and Yangtze river dolphins, Hawai'i for the delicate lovely spinner dolphin, the Arctic for bowhead and gray whale work, and bottlenose dolphins in several milieus -- they have always returned to their first love of unraveling the social patterns and life strategies of duskies that exist in small groups in semi-enclosed bays and as herds of well over one thousand in the open ocean. This book documents the latest research, from their feeding patterns to their acrobatic skills. It is full of scientific facts, with a sense of poetry and wonder of the unknown.

Step up to General Lines

The (General Lines) book proves more comprehensive than the Personal Lines version of the same exam. That is the one you want to use to take the big boy test like I did. The Personal Lines version would be good for the personal lines test, but I seen no reason why anyone wouldn't just take the test that allows them to write everything without having to test again.I borrowed the Passtrak Property and Casualty Insurance: License Exam Manual (Passtrak (Unnumbered)) 6th Edition of this book from the library and found it to be even more comprehensive than the latest Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Cram which I also reviewed for the test. At first I was measuring how much was covered in this Dearborn Passtrak Manual and when I reviewed questions from Exam Cram I felt better about how I did and my ability to answer questions caused me to feel quite prepared. When I went back to review questions from this Dearborn PassTrak, I was reminded how much more comprehensive it is.All in all, for any shortcomings of this Dearborn Passtrak book has tougher questions and more of them so I found it to offer the best preparation among the material I reviewed. I was able to pass the TEXAS Exam the first time.Study well.And prepare for a great harvest.
